Marken:
The region has hills, mountains but also a beautiful coasts. The
capital is Ancona and it is the link with the East. Ancona is the
middle Adriatic’s largest port. Important sights are the Piazza
del Plebiscito and the Cattedrale di San Ciriaco. In the inland
are some some of Italy’s most splendid ancient cities like
Urbino, Ascoli Piceno, Macerata and Pesaro. Urbino is one of the
most beautiful hill towns in Italy. Senigallia is one of the best
bathing beaches on the Adriatic coast. Macerata is as impressive
as many Umbrian and Tuscan hill towns but without hordes of tourists.
Ascoli Piceno’s art, history and traditions rival many of
the better-known towns in Italy. The Monti Sibillini range is one
of the most beautiful stretches of the Apennines. Dotted with caves
and lined with walking trails, it is also the scene of more energetic
activities such as hang-gliding, horse riding, skiing in winter
and trekking in summer.
